What makes a person liberal or conservative?

Is it something you are born with? Does it depend on environmental factors? Is it something that is taught? What makes a person liberal or conservative?
I would say environmental, but that is not always the case. Education has an influence, but not to the point of full determination.

We all have some idea or concept of what is 'right' or 'wrong'. A lot of things go into the composition, but ultimately each person must add their own psyche into the crucible, which will ultimately orientate the resultant growth towards either a more liberal or more conservative position.

Needless to say, we begin our journey as dynamic and diverse individuals having great potential for abstract and constructive thought. Our best hope, as Americans, is that the ingenuity and integrity which birthed this nation shall endure beyond mere liberal or conservative constructs.

One of our greatest perils is in the surrendering of that process whereby each person discovers and ';proofs'; the merits of ideals and concepts. Ignoring failures from perhaps the greatest perspective we have, history, is an open invitation to repeat them once more in our future. Yet, trying to navigate a ship through a mine field while only using a rear view mirror would be as equally disastrous.

We need to use the best of our nation to the very best of our abilities. To avoid the mistakes of the past and see clearly the best course to set for the future. And perhaps even more importantly, be willing to do whatever it takes to ensure the safety and passage of all those who are on board.

What good are the bright sails and the band playing briskly if, when the port calls, all are lost at sea?

What makes a person liberal or conservative?
Various factors in a person's environment help to make a person liberal or conservative.

If your family is altruistic, have had many members, past and present, serving in the military, police, or fire department, or own or supervise small businesses, you would probably be a conservative.

If your family history involves lawyers, left-wing nutcase teachers and draft dodgers, the chronically unemployed for no good reason, have criminal ties, or your family is near a very legalistic or left-wing educational facility, and have very few family members who ever voluntarily wore a uniform, and those, probably only for the benefits, while trying to avoid active service in someplace dangerous...you would probably be a liberal.

If you lack research skills, or are very young, and don't want to find out facts for yourself, but instead want to listen to silly mantras and racism, you would probably be liberal.

If you refuse to answer polls, either because you are busy working, or are intimidated by the questions or questioners, you would probably be conservative.

If you are older and more knowledgeable and experienced, you would probably be conservative.

If you are voting for your first time, or are too young to vote, and enjoy your Koolade, you would probably be liberal.

If you have nothing to hide, and do not fear, but welcome the various aspects of the Patriot Act, you would probably be a conservative.

If you have a nasty little secret, or have something to hide...you would probably be a liberal.

If you prefer beer and alcohol to drugs, you would probably be a conservative.

If you prefer drugs to beer, then you would probably be a liberal.

If you think gay people kissing in front of you is gross, then you would be a conservative.

If you think that is okay, and maybe want to do that too, then you would be liberal.

Enough points?
It depends on the person's environment. Seriously, I don't think a conservative is any different from a liberal in what life experiences they have. Its just a different application of morality and beliefs

If you thought about it, all cultures have different moral codes. Certain groups will believe in one thing and another would object as abhorrent. The Cattalians in Hellenistic Greece ate their deceased fathers as a sign of respect. Greeks who heard this were abhorrent of this practice. Eskimoes in the early 20th century practiced infanticide and left their elders to die in the cold. This was an ethical practice to save the pack

Different moral codes all come from an inherent style of beleifs from natural law. Natural law exists independent of time and place and can explain why certain groups retain the codes they have.
I grew up in a conservative community. When I went to college, I saw African American people badly treated. During the '60s, I saw African Americans physically assaulted by law enforcement when they demanded their rights as American citizens. I could never be part of anything socially conservative. On the other side of the coin, I agree with fiscal conservatives, but not with fiscal neoconservatives. There is a huge difference.
Parent indoctrination of their children with either close minded adherence to tradition, or open-minded social experimentation, coupled with political socialization of friends.

Close-minded people tend to stick together closing anyone else out, so the aren't exposed to new ideas, so maybe a little bit of being a social outcast helps people stick to their traditional views.
I grew up in NYC in a very liberal environment. At home there was no talk about politics due that my parent were immigrants and had more on their mind than politics.I went to a mostly black high school (97 %) and I don't know why, around that time that's when a clinched to conservative views.
Your intelligence level or lack there of.

My parents were Republicans My mother voted straight ticket no matter what.

I am Republican yet 4 of the 7 kids are Democrat the 3 who are Republicans are the better educated.
Values system. Usually learned by life experiences. That is why most older people like me tend to be conservative.

Liberals criticize you if you don't wash your hands after you pee.

Conservatives don't pee on their hands.
CONSERVATIVE= traditional, old fashioned values

LIBERAL=modern, more open-minded
Hopefully your allowed to make your own decision like I was. Secret ballet ring a bell?
common sense, liberals have none Republicans have some
