What does it mean when people refer to others as being a 'liberal' as opposed to a 'conservative' ?

I have noticed this especially with people who live in the USA, they call one group of people liberals, and another group conservatives?

In Australia, if you are a liberal supporter, then you are also a conservative. I don't understand the difference between the two. What does it mean when people refer to others as being a 'liberal' as opposed to a 'conservative' ?
It's a Canadian thing. We have two main political parties, Liberal and Conservative just like the americans have Democratic and Republican parties. What does it mean when people refer to others as being a 'liberal' as opposed to a 'conservative' ?
That's easy:

When a little girl is RAPED by a famous film director, Conservatives call him a RAPIST.

When a little girl is RAPED by a famous film director, Liberals ask whether he committed rape or rape-rape.
There is Conservative--Fiscally Liberal [atleast for those who have controlled the GOP for the past few years] %26amp; socially conservative [anti-immigration, anti-Affirmative action, etc]

Liberalism is just whoever Conservatives don't like
Liberals are emotionally mature. Conservatives approach everything as though they're still fighting with siblings over who got the most cereal.
In the USA, Liberals are Lazy, Freeloaders and they hate anybody who isn't one of them, Conservatives are the opposite
In the US a liberal is one who believes in anything goes, a conservative likes the old values.
It is a term that has lost all meaning and just used as a general slander for anyone who fancies themselves as a conservative yet is meeting opposition from another person.
So go read some books or pay attention.

How stupid are you?
