Schools like NYU, Columbia and Barnard are out--way too expensive, and I couldn't get into the last two anyway. Are there any schools around NYC that are liberal arts oriented and not too pricey?

Are you from NY State? If so, then some of the SUNYs may actually be exactly what you're looking for. I'm thinking SUNY New Paltz, specifically. It's a good school, in a fun town, and is primarily liberal arts oriented. It's about 1.5 hours from NYC, and you can get there by bus.
Right in the city, I'd have you give a serious look to Hunter College. Hunter, like Baruch, is a CUNY, but it's more liberal arts than business. City College may also work, or Lehman; but I'm thinking you may like Hunter.
Other schools I think you'd like are SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Geneseo. Good schools, SUNYs so relatively inexpensive, and mainly liberal arts. All accessible via bus or train.
Schools that will be more expensive - but you'll apply for financial aid - but which otherwise I think you might really like are Wagner College (which is *stunning*, and is on Staten Island, so not far), Manhattan College (also in the city), and Manhattanville College (in Westchester).What is the best liberal arts college close to New York City?
Geneseo is kind of far, but New Paltz is really only one quick hour away, and I believe there are direct buses from New Paltz to NYC. Manhattanville is even closer - maybe 30 minutes. Wagner and Manhattan, of course, are right in the city. If you got into Geneseo, you stand a good shot at New Paltz
