Because they're freaking idiots.
It's almost insulting really. I may not be a liberal, but I'm always deemed a ';weak Christian'; because I don't share their bigotry. As if their religion is somehow better than mine.
If you're a Christian liberal, conservatives equate you with being an oxymoron. I've seen it both in real life, heard on the radio, seen it on FAUX News. If you go to the Politics section right now, I'm positive you'll see some anti-atheist or anti-liberal business.
You can't be anything but what a Fundie says and be a good person, b/c Fundies are inherently insecure and can't have their one rock and foundation challenged or they will mentally fall apart.
My father is one such, though a quiet one. Raised Irish Catholic American, is the only one who insists that both parents were perfect, because if they weren't, well, let's just say he'd have to see them for the alcoholic and terrible ***** that they were, and he'd never be able to deal with the pain.
So Mom, Dad, God, Jesus, and especially Mother Mary are all perfect, as is the woman in his life at the time (long time for two of the three) and that's it. No debates, no nothing. He is 100%, I am 100% wrong, and they are perfect.
And we both get abused for it, so I just don't even bother with them at all.
B/c he's so insecure. And he spent nearly 12 years celibate till the annulment finally came through. And you know what? I believe it. I don't know why he told me, but h's crazy enough to tdo just that.
And she's bitchy enough as a result!
So, yeah, they are desperate to cover over their pain and fears, that's why.
If you believed Jesus is the Son of God, would you think a president who said point blank the United States is not a Christian nation anymore is great?
They are just hateful. The closer to fundamentalism you get, the angrier and more hateful you become. Stay a liberal.
Same reason so many atheists equate Christians to being conservative fundamentalists.
